Many years ago when I was around 7-8 years old, I was living with my Grandparents. My Granddad was sitting in his favorite chair and reading the newspaper whilst having his cup of tea and gingernuts.
He had dunked his gingernut, as one is prone to do...when after taking it out and holding it for a moment..he nodded off to sleep, cup of tea balanced on his knee, paper in one hand, soggy gingernut held in the other.
I looked up to see his gingernut starting to bend over from the moisture of the tea. I called out to him
"Granddad...Granddad..."on the third try I yelled a bit... "GRANDDAD"....he woke with a bit of a start and said "WHAT"...I said "Your gingernut". As he rushed to put it in his mouth it collapsed completely and he mushed it all over his chin.
I remember rolling around laughing and ran to tell my Nana. My Granddad was often a little grumpy due to a stroke, but even this made him laugh. One of the best laughs I ever recall my Granddad laughing.
I remember this day every time I have Gingernuts....and just like my Granddad...I still dunk in my tea..or anyone else's for that matter...to this day!
